Increasingly popular, the string banjo is enjoying a resurgence of popularity due to the new music made popular by performers such as Mumford and Sons.

Personally, as a long-time guitar player, my advice is that you should grab your self a banjo and give it a try - it is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face !

The 5 string banjo is used for bluegrass music, usually in the style popularised by Earl Scruggs, and players look for a resonator and heavy brass tone ring. For old time clawhammer or frailing styles a simpler open backed model is better. Finger style classical banjo also uses the 5 string (with nylon strings) but is less common now.
